Thanks in advance for your assistance in “stomping out stigma” and “raising awareness” of children’s mental health needs by removing barriers to learning that provides every child the opportunity to succeed!

Thursday, May 6, 2010 has been designated as Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.  A day set aside to raise awareness of the need for quality, effective programs to address the challenging mental health needs of children and their families.  Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is a national day of recognition for everyone to demonstrate the importance of promoting positive development of the “whole child,” physical as well as social-emotional needs that foster recovery and resiliency.

The theme of Awareness Day 2010 focuses on the importance positive mental health has on a child’s healthy development with the key message that “positive mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development from birth.”  You can show support by wearing your “green ribbon” and join the celebration to promote positive mental health, well-being for all children and youth by spreading the message that without mental health one cannot be physically healthy.  Serious emotional and mental health disorders in children and youth are real yet treatable if identified.  As our future, every child and youth facing mental health challenges deserve access to quality, effective services and supports that are family and youth driven and provided in a culturally appropriate environment.

Numerous community planned events have been created to celebrate Awareness Day; wearing crazy socks to symbolize your commitment to “sock-it-to mental illness,” carnivals and health fairs that raise awareness or a crazy hat that sends the message “hats off to mental health!

Austin/Travis County area will host several celebrations that include:
